‘Amazing Grace’ Tartan Scarves and Mugs
On New Year’s Day in 1773 in the town of Olney, the words of the hymn Amazing Grace were read in public for the first time. They had been penned by John Newton, a former slave trader turned minister and abolitionist, whose life had been transformed by the amazing grace of God. The tune that has become synonymous with the hymn is a favourite with pipers across the globe, and the words have become an anthem for the largest ‘Clan’ in the world who, along with John Newton, say:
Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I’m found
Was blind but now I see…
The story of God’s amazing grace is told in the colours of this tartan, created in 2023 on the 250th anniversary of the writing of the hymn, to raise funds for our new building project.
Dark Grey – Background of darkness and brokenness
Red – The sacrifice of Jesus
White – Bringing cleansing
Blue – Healing
Green – Leading to change and growth
Gold – Ultimately to glory
